Renting a Newark and Sherwood District Council property

Newark and Sherwood District Council properties are allocated to those eligible for housing and priority is given to those in most housing need.
Transfer of housing management service: As a result of all housing management functions returning to the Council from February 2020, the Allocation Scheme is now being reviewed. The main functions and assessment criteria of the scheme are still the same. You will be placed into the correct banding for bidding or allocation. This will depend on all your circumstances.
The Council will be changing the way decisions are made in line with this policy. We will also be considering who should review decisions if you appeal against the original decision made by an officer. Until the new policy is finalised, any appeal will be carried out by the same level of Manager as is set out in the policy now. This means your appeal will be reconsidered by an officer more senior than the person who made the original decision. The manager looking at the appeal will not have been involved in making the 1st decision about your case. We intend to publish a new policy scheme as soon as possible once all final details are confirmed.

The application form will ask you for details about yourself and everyone who will live in the property, where you live now, where you would like to live and whether you have any medical conditions or disabilities which might affect the type of property you require.
Once you are on the housing register you will be given an application reference number which you will need to view your application and bid on available properties. This is called a “choice based letting” system and means you can choose where you want to live.
To bid on available properties using My Account, applicants will need to use their housing application reference number to create an account.
