Renting a Newark and Sherwood District Council property

COVID-19 Update: The government has amended the Coronavirus (COVID-19) regulations to allow people to move. This guidance provides advice on viewing a property safely with Newark and Sherwood District Council. For more information please visit Covid-19: Viewing Advice.

Newark and Sherwood District Council properties are allocated to those eligible for housing and priority is given to those in most housing need.

Newark and Sherwood District Council has an Allocation scheme (PDF File, 645kb) that sets out the rules for deciding how properties are allocated. For more information visit here

Transfer of housing management service: As a result of all housing management functions returning to the Council from February 2020, the Allocation Scheme is now being reviewed. The main functions and assessment criteria of the scheme are still the same. You will be placed into the correct banding for bidding or allocation. This will depend on all your circumstances.

The Council will be changing the way decisions are made in line with this policy. We will also be considering who should review decisions if you appeal against the original decision made by an officer.  Until the new policy is finalised, any appeal will be carried out by the same level of Manager as is set out in the policy now. This means your appeal will be reconsidered by an officer more senior than the person who made the original decision. The manager looking at the appeal will not have been involved in making the 1st decision about your case. We intend to publish a new policy scheme as soon as possible once all final details are confirmed.

As a council tenant, you will have a Tenancy Agreement (PDF File, 863kb).

As a council tenant you have responsibilities including:

  • Paying your rent in full and on time to maintain a clear rent account
  • To report repairs needed to your home
  • To live in your property as your only or main home
  • Not to be a nuisance

Newark and Sherwood District Council's responsibilities include:
